Clinic Visits
Main Page
If this is your first visit here at the Center, you probably have lots of questions...
- What will happen?
- Who will I see?
- Where do I go?
- Why are they doing that?
- How will I ever remember all of this?
Hopefully, this guide will help you to understand some of what has to be done.
Location: Map
The clinic is at 730 Welch Rd, across the street
from Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.
Parking: Behind the building at 730 Welch Rd.
Bring: (helpful information for each clinic visit)
- Insurance card
- Authorization from your HMO or PPO
- Name and phone number of at least one contact person
- List of current medications
- List of treatments currently done
- Health history since last visit, including any new drug or other allergies
- Your list of questions/concerns
People you will meet:
- The receptionist will sign you in and let clinic staff know you are here. Don't forget to bring your insurance information.
- The nurse will call you and check vital signs: height, weight, temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and maybe a peak flow test. There will be questions about your medical history including any medications you are taking.
- The doctor will talk to you and review the reasons for your coming here. Any tests that you had done before coming to the center will, ideally, be in your record (or maybe you will be bringing records from your doctor). There will be questions about your medical history again. The doctor will do a physical examination.
- The respiratory therapist will do spirometry tests, if you are old enough, that show how your lungs are functioning. If you haven't done them before, they can be hard to do, but that's OK, you'll learn.
- The nutritionist will help you with diet and meal planning.
- The social worker will help you get connected to various resources or support groups.
- You might need a chest x-ray, or a sputum culture, or some blood work.
- Maybe you'll be given a prescription to fill.
- You will be told when you should come back to clinic.
- And the last step... the receptionist will make an appointment for your next clinic visit.
Some tests that are usually done:
- Sweat chloride: done as a diagnostic test only
- Spirometry: lung function tests
- Chest x-ray: done annually to detect subtle changes in the lungs
- Sputum culture: a test of the matter that is coughed up from the lungs
- Blood tests: e.g. serum lipids, liver function tests, blood sugar tests
